“Weareallgoing.”
Mileswasfascinatedbypeople’slastwords,andhekeptthisonefromPresidentWilliamMcKinleyinmindandwenttoseekforaGreatPerhaps.
Onehundredandthirty-sixdaysago,helefthishomeforaboardingschoolandgotintoAlaskaYang’slife.Clever,funny,screwedup,anddeadsexy,AlaskapulledhimintoherdeliberatelysetlabyrinthandcatapulthimintotheGreatPerhaps.
Theysharedtheirliveswitheachother.Firstdrink,firstprank,firstfriend……Allmemorableeventsandintimatemomentspushedhimandhercloser.ButMileswouldneverknewtheywouldhavethelastdrink,whensheleftherlastwords“tobecontinued”andwenttoseekforherwayoutofthelabyrinth.AstilldrunkAlaskadroveoffthecampusandgotintotheforestsfastandstraight,whichkilledherinstantly.SheleftMilesalonewithaguiltymindofnotstoppingher.Helivedwithstrugglingbecausehecouldn’tstoprecallinghersmiles;hetriedtofindher,butnothingcouldhealhisbleedingheart.
ButMilesstillremembered:“Weareallgoing.”
Heeventuallyrealizedwhathebelievedasthewaygoingoutofthelabyrinth,topretendthatthelabyrinthdidnotexist,tobuildasmall,self-sufficientworldinabackcorneroftheendlessmaze,wastotallywrong.
Afteronehundredandnineteendays,hefinallypushedhimselfoutofthesufferingandtheguiltyoflosingher.HebegantoknowtheanswerofwhattheGreatPerhapswas,andhowtheywouldevergetoutofthelabyrinth.WhenhewasabouttoforgetAlaska,toforgiveherdyingandlies,heknewshewouldforgivehisforgettingthesame.Ultimately,hebelievedshewasnotjustmatter,herspirithadtogosomewhere.
Peoplecannotbeborn,neithercouldtheydie.Likeallenergy,peoplecouldonlychangeshapesandsizesandmanifestations.
JustlikeThomasEdison’slastwordswere:it’sverybeautifuloverthere.”Mileswouldneverknowwheretherewas,buthebelieveditwassomewhere,andhehopeditwasbeautiful.
